A cheat is a great way to describe it. I feel cheated out of the real way a story should go, or cheated out of the real ending. I'll admit that I spend a lot of time thinking about how a character should have acted but that's not the same thing as enjoying the story.

In Stephen King's 'Misery' Annie Wilkes describes a 'cheat'. I can't remember the exact wording but she was talking about Saturday morning pictures. One Saturday ended on the hero going over the cliff in a car, the next one began with the car crashed and the hero out before it went over the cliff with no explanation.

Ever since I read that, if I'm in doubt about something I've written I always ask myself 'is it a cheat?'. I'm quick to shout it out about books and films too :)
